A Wild Year in the Lakes with Bernard Cribbins
I've already tweeted about this programme but it was so wonderful I thought it deserved a little blog all of its own. On Saturday night I put my feet up with a large glass of something fruity and was delighted to catch a documentary on BBC2 all about the beautiful Lake District. The bonus was that the brilliant narration came from comedy legend Mr Bernard Cribbins.I grew up listening to Bernard's wonderful voice on children's television. He added an extra sparkle to The Wombles and graced more episodes of the BBC's Jackanory than any other performer. Bernard was just made for that kind of programme. At the grand old age of 88, Mr Cribbins is still in fine form and his dulcet tones lent themselves perfectly to this hour long trip through a year in the life of the Lakes.
There seems to be a real trend at the moment for programming capturing the magnificence of the Great British countryside and I'm all for it. This one though was very special. The photography and technology used to show the Lake District through all four seasons was splendid and that coupled with the talented Cribbins raised it to another level.
If you missed the programme but this has inspired you to check it out, fear not as it is still available through the BBC's "watch again" service on the iPlayer. You can find out more about the programme and catch up with the show here
