For this month's edition of our ongoing series co-presented and programmed by Subway Cinema, we present a double bill of two early chanbara classics: Kihachi Okamoto's Kill! and Hideo Gosha's Three Outlaw Samurai on 35mm

Kihachi Okamoto, 1968, Japan, 115m, 35mm
Samurai auteur Okamoto takes the same source novel as Kurosawa’s Sanjuro and turns it into a dark send-up of the genre. Tatsuya Nakadai brilliantly portrays a down-on-his-luck swordsman slumming with yakuza who eventually teams up with a farmer-turned-fighter to turn clan intrigue on its heels amid classic violent, sword-slashing fury.

Three Outlaw Samurai
Hideo Gosha, 1964, Japan, 95m, 35mm
This dynamic first feature paved the way for an oeuvre abundant with thrilling chanbara action. Two samurai are sent to execute the peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate, but their loyalties come into question when they meet a wily ronin who sides with the underdogs.
