Concept Art: Student Showcase
Artwork by Xu Xing |
We recently concluded an 8 week class in Concept Art, taught by the very talented Cenay Oekmen, veteran of X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy. It was the first time we have run the class, which is aimed at helping students break into one of the most creative parts of the development process. Concept artists work closely with the director to determine the look and feel of a project, helping to bring the director's vision to life. Among the many excellent pieces of work produced by our students was the evocative painting above by Xu Xing.
Xu Xing
Xu Xing's work succeeds on many levels, not the least of which is that she invites us into a world, making the viewer curious to learn more. Concept art, done well, should excite the viewer and make us want to find out more about the unique universe being created.
Heather Langford
Other successful pieces include work by Heather Langford - see her stunning work "Jack" below.

In addition, Heather produced a 3D Sculpt of her character "Jack", showing a successful ability to work in more than one medium. Concept Art increasingly involves a blend of traditional skills as well as 2D media such as Photoshop, and even 3D skills such as ZBrush and Maya. Being versatile and having an ability to master different software packages is a big advantage.
