Louis Chevis Wins Animation Scholarship
Louis Chevis |
Louis is a first year undergraduate student at Escape Studios, studying for his BA/MArt in the Art of Computer Animation. Despite fierce competition, Louis has won the Eamonn Butler animation scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded annually by Eamonn Butler, head of animation at Cinesite; and prior to that head of the animation dept at Disney.
Eamonn Butler Scholarship
Eamonn Butler |
"I really appreciated that Louis' test animation told a story. Its a great sign in a young animation student that they understand that their work needs to be entertaining. He showed an understanding of the principles as well as demonstrating solid acting choices. He has a ways to go to develop his core animation skills but I think he'll make a very good animator."
Eamonn Butler is a regular visit to Escape Studios, helping our students to acquire the right skills to break into the industry. To see Eamonn's tips for what goes into a great animation reel, and what Cinesite is looking for in a well-rounded animation graduate, read this blog post.
3Dami |
Louis Chevis is currently in his first year of studies at Escape Studios, studying the Art of Computer Animation (BA/MArt).
Prior to Escape Studios, Louis studied at The BRIT School for Performing Arts, graduating with a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Interactive Media, with Distinction. Here at Escape Studios, we're big fans of the BRIT school; each year we see a growing number of students with excellent 3D portfolios.
3Dami
Louis has done a great deal of work in animation to get this far. In July 2019 Louis participated in the summer animation program run by 3Dami, a film-making bootcamp hosted over the summer months at University College London, during which young people from the ages of 14-18 form small teams to create a short film in just 7 days using the free animation software Blender. Here at Escape Studios we are big fans of 3Dami - and we strongly recommend their summer courses for anyone aged 14-18 who is interested in animation.
Forbidden Film
At 3Dami, Louis produced the short "Forbidden Film", in which two underage kids want to watch a movie at the cinema, but are too young to buy a ticket. When the ticket seller refuses them entry for their age, they dream up a hare-brained scheme to get in.
From pitch to final render
Louis pitched the concept for Forbidden Film, which was unanimously chosen by the team. Louis then served as director, overseeing the project, drawing storyboards and also animating, and supervising the younger students who had little or no experience with animation. Louis described the experience as rewarding but hard work, explaining that he and a few other students "often found ourselves staying hours into the evening to get certain things done when there were errors with rendering or when we weren't meeting our deadlines. This was also the first time I was using Blender, and although functionality-wise it is almost identical to Maya, the UI is entirely different and took me a fair while to get to grips with. That said it was a very fun and incredible experience that tested my ability to work in a team under pressure".
11 Second Club Monthly Competition
Louis has also entered the 11 Second Club monthly contest on two occasions, in both May and June 2019. To see his excellent work, check out the examples below.
11 Second Club Entry - May 2019
11 Second Club Entry - June 2019
In the video below Louis shows his final 11 Second Club entry, as well as some of his initial blocking, showing how he developed the piece from start to finish.
Entering the 11 Second Club is an excellent idea; there is no better way to develop your skills as an animator. We strongly recommend that our students enter this competition as often as they can. Each time you enter you will get better at character animation, and raise your game as an animator.
