OBS Studio - Free Screen Recording Software

Following on from yesterday's blog post about Quick Time, and its utility for tutors practicing distance learning, Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) offers another useful option for our tutors at Escape Studios. For those of who are switching to online delivery of our courses, OBS is easy to install and completely free to use, for Windows and Mac devices.

About OBS
OBS is a free and open-source recording program maintained by the OBS Project. There are versions of OBS available for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux. It's a useful piece of software, with the great advantage of being free.

Beginner's Guide
To see how to use OBS Studio, watch the easy-to-follow video above. Start in the Sources box, select the + sign, and then go to "Display Capture". Make sure that "make source visible" is checked.

No "Pause" button...grrr...

The Downside - No Pause Button
Like Quick Time (and unlike, say Camtasia), OBS has no pause button, which is annoying.  This means you can't pause in mid-recording to make a cup of tea or answer the front door. If there is a glitch in your recording you either have to leave it in, or edit it out later. To see a thread bewailing the lack of a pause button on OBS, follow this link.

In practice, when you are giving feedback, a pause button isn't a vital tool. But when you are recording tutorial videos that should be brief, smooth and error-free, the lack of a pause button becomes a considerable hindrance, because you have to edit out the mistakes later on, which takes time.

Consider Camtasia
