Ariela Rubin on THE COURTROOM (2022) Tribeca 2022
The Courtroom is a film about the true-life story of Elizabeth Keathley. Elizabeth is a Filipino immigrant who mistakenly registers to vote and then proceeds to vote because she thinks it's okay since the DMV sends her a voter registration card. Voting, while not a US citizen is a crime punishable by deportation.
The film is a courtroom drama. The entire 87-minute film takes place in the courtroom. It feels very real. It's hard to remember sometimes that it's not a real-life court drama I was watching. They did use the entire original courtroom transcript word for word.
The actress who was Elizabeth's lawyer was great! The judges all felt like real judges. There was some court/lawyer lingo that was confusing at times, but the story overall is easy to understand. I enjoyed it, and I really felt for Elizabeth. It will make you sad, frustrated, and angry at times. I think it's worth a watch.
