OKIKU AND THE WORLD (2023) NYAFF 2023

Mannered black and white tale of the lives of two men whose job it is to clean the latrines of Tokyo to sell the waste to farmers. Their lives are complicated when one of the men falls for a school teacher who is supporting her ex-samurai father.

While the film has some wonderful moments, I'm not sure if the film truly hangs together.  The problem, for me at least, is that the hand of director Junji Sakamoto is all over the film. You can feel him moving things around and keeping the film as kind of period Jim Jarmusch film. While I suspect that will work for some, it prevented me from falling under the films spell
