Oscar Nominees: Best Actor in a Supporting Role
My predictions: 3/5, picking Armie Hammer and Michael Shannon over Harrelson and Plummer
My ballot: Come back in February!
The nominees: Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
I have to say, this is a great list. I was championing Shannon because I thought that he was a huge part of what made “The Shape of Water” great and this performance was better than his other two Oscar-nominated turns, but I’d say the same about Harrelson and his initially under-rewarded contribution to the film. Plummer, while not as good as in his previous Oscar roles, was the best part of an underwhelming film, and so it’s good to see him honored. Those were my two alternates, and I was never really rooting for the supporting actors for “Call Me By Your Name,” even though I would have been happy to see Hammer here and okay with Michael Stuhlbarg getting some recognition after appearing in three Best Picture nominees this year. It saddens me that Dafoe is the lone representative of his film, which could have showed up in the top races but didn’t.
My current bet to win: It looks like it’s going to be Rockwell.
