The nominees: The Big Sick, Get Out, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This was one of my few perfect categories, and it’s a very expected list despite a competitive field. I’m both thrilled and relieved that “The Big Sick,” which sadly missed the Best Picture lineup, did manage to knock four Best Picture nominees out of this race, joining the other four that did get nominated. Those four also scored Best Director bids and each came away with a pretty good haul. I’m still not overly fond of “Get Out” or “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” but I can acknowledge that this is a good group of scripts.

My current bet to win: It could be a few of these – I’ll give the edge to Get Out but it might also be “Lady Bird” or “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
