Escapees Chan and Melissa celebrate
Many congratulations to Escapees Chan Sagoo, Daniel Amor and Melissa Coarezza, who are all celebrating graduating from the Technicolour Academy, and becoming junior animators at MPC in London.

Technicolour Academy describes itself as "is a learning and development program supporting VFX talent ready to step into a career at one of the world’s leading VFX Studios for feature and episodic content".

We asked Melissa a few questions about her experience at Technicolour Academy, and how she got prepared for work on a forthcoming major motion picture.

Escape: How was your experience at Technicolor Academy?

Melissa: During our time at Technicolour Academy we have been trained on the production workflow, while enhancing our animation skills, in order to reach the highest level possible in terms of realism.

The most important thing to learn has been how the production pipeline works and all the tools we're going to be using, which has been technically the main focus of the Academy. In this way, they are making sure we will be ready to perform all the procedures once we get on the production floor. Our academy trainer Federico always says that we've been trained on 'how to be professionals', and that's precisely what is going on during the Academy.

Escape: What kind of animation did you do?
Melissa: On the animation side, we practiced animation on both bipeds and quadrupeds through different tasks: from body mechanics, to interaction between characters, to lipsync and rotoanimation. We learnt the importance of studying and following references, and we focused on hyper-realism as much as possible. I also got the opportunity, alongside another Academy student, to work on extra assignments involving more technical knowledge, such as Python scripting, learning to develop Maya tools for animators.

Escape: How did you get prepared for industry?
Melissa: For the final two weeks of the programme we began to migrate onto the production floor. This involved having meetings with our future leads and production coordinators, and looking at dailies from the movies MPC Film is working on. These meetings and the opportunity to see the work helps builds our confidence as well as making the move more seamless.

Melissa is now working at MPC on Maleficent 2.
