The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra (2022)
While THE FIFTH THORACIC VERTEBRA may remind you of other films, say RUBBER, A GHOST STORY, UNDER THE SKIN or DEATH BED, I assure you that Syeyoung Park's film is one of a kind.
The film is the story of a fungus that attaches itself to the mattress of a young woman studying fungi. For reasons we really never know the fungus becomes aware and begins to grow. We watch as the mattress travels from person to person, the fungi feeds on people, and life goes on.
While the film is nominally a horror this is really something else entirely. Transcending the form the film is actually a sad and bittersweet tale of loneliness. Not even remotely human, the fungus is a true outside. Unable to really interact with other consciousnesses, it drifts through life totally alone.
It is heartbreaking.
It's a wonderful ride down a different road.
I really liked this film a great deal because Park decided to make a film and not worry about checking off boxes. We really haven't seen this before so we become truly invested.
