BRIEF TENDER LIGHT (2023)
Three young men and one young woman from Africa come to America to study at MIT in order to be able to return and use what they learn for good.
Sweet little documentary about the hope of the future is in our children. It is also a look at the problems that Africans face trying to take what they learned in America back to their home lands. How much of this country and its way of seeing and doing things can they bring back and still have it work.
What makes the film work is the fact that the filmmakers spent the better part of a decade following their subjects. This is not a one and done sort of thing, rather this film that truly shows the arc of lives and projects over a long period of time. What I love is that we get a sense of things bleeding off the screen, for better and worse. Truthfully, there are bits in these stories that could have been lengthened or made into their own films. While I know that wouldn't have been practical from an economic stand point I think it would have made several moment hit us harder.
Definitely worth a look as the film plays Jan. 5-11, 2024 in New York City at Firehouse: DCTV's Cinema for Documentary Film, Washington at JxJ: DC Jewish Film & Music Jan. 7, and 11, 2024 before the Broadcast Premiere on PBS’s POV Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Jan. 15, 2024
