SAG Winner Predictions: Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role
The competition: Steve Carell’s chauvinistic tennis player (Battle of the Sexes), Willem Dafoe’s motel manager (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson’s tormented sheriff (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Richard Jenkins’ kindly artist (The Shape of Water), and Sam Rockwell’s temperamental cop (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). For your information: Carell earned six consecutive nominations for “The Office” and one film bid for “Foxcatcher.” Dafoe was previously nominated for “Shadow of the Vampire.” Harrelson has been nominated twice before for film and twice for TV. Jenkins was nominated for “The Visitor” and for miniseries “Olive Kitteridge.” This is the first individual nomination for Rockwell, who is nominated along with Harrelson this year as part of their film’s ensemble.
Who should win? These are all terrific performances. I might actually vote for Harrelson over his Golden Globe-winning costar since I thought he was superb and was thrilled to see him included here. Any of them would be great choices too.
Who will win? With both Harrelson and Rockwell here for the same film, I think that Dafoe can pull ahead.
