Namoo (2021) Tribeca 2021
Oscar nominee Erick Oh’s follow up to OPERA is a beautiful visual poem about one man’s life that is based on his grandfather. The film is the arc of a man’s life, with tree (Namoo means tree) being the place that he stores all his things.
Taking a completely different visual approach to story telling from his last film. Namoo looks like a pastel painting come to life. It’s a film that is more often than not told in a 2D style with glorious camera moves that suddenly have things popping out and coming to life. I wanted to get lost in the technical aspect of it all but found that I was too busy being moved by the visceral nature of the story. I don’t think I caught all the little details but that didn’t stop me from my getting misty and having my jaw drop open in the final moments.
Oh how I wish I could have seen this on a big screen.
An absolute delight Namoo is a must….
